Starting counselling, step by step

Beginning your first counselling session can feel uncertain, especially if you’re not sure what to expect. Taking that first step can feel daunting, but having a clearer picture of how things work often helps you feel more at ease. Here’s a gentle guide to what happens in your first meeting, how sessions unfold, and how we’ll move forward together at your pace.

Your first session

Your first session is a space to slow down and talk things through at your own pace. There’s no pressure to share everything straight away. We’ll usually:

  • talk about what’s brought you here
  • explore what you’d like support with
  • discuss your goals or hopes for counselling
  • answer any questions you may have
  • decide together whether counselling feels like the right fit

Many people say they feel relieved simply having space to talk openly. There’s no “right way” to do therapy — you can just come as you are.

Ongoing support

Regular sessions give you consistent time to reflect, process and feel supported. Sessions are:

  • 50 minutes long
  • weekly or fortnightly
  • confidential and non-judgemental
  • guided by what feels most important to you

Some weeks you might talk about something specific. Other times you might simply need space to think and feel. Both are completely okay. We work at your pace — not a timetable.

Online sessions from the comfort of home

All sessions take place online using a secure video platform. You can join from:

  • your home
  • university
  • a private room
  • anywhere you feel safe and comfortable
  • All you need is a quiet space, internet connection and a phone or laptop

Many clients find online therapy feels just as personal as face-to-face, with the added comfort of being in familiar surroundings.
